Mixing Tools
Thoroughly mixing your product is key for consistency and proper adhesion
Mixing paddles.
Look for a high-quality mixing paddle that’s made with rust-resistant materials. An optimal blade is designed in such a way that allows for the material to move evenly around and through the mixer.
Mixing bucket.
A durable mixing bucket is a must-have for all concrete contractors. Tip: A translucent bucket makes measuring materials easier.
Rollers
Depending on the type of coating you’re using, you may need to use a paint roller to apply it to the concrete surface.
Paint roller.
Use a high-quality frame and roller to coat the material evenly across the surface of the concrete.
Extension pole.
For extending the reach of your paint roller. Opt for a well-constructed pole that locks securely into your frame to prevent wobbling.
Brushes
For detail work that you can’t do with rollers, you’ll need to use a synthetic bristle brush for edges and corners that rollers can’t reach. It’s a good idea to keep several on hand.
Squeegees
When applying coatings such as epoxies or sealers, a squeegee helps get an even application on your concrete surface.
Sprayers
Several types of coatings are best applied with sprayers, and it’s crucial to use a sprayer that’s easy to use and distributes product evenly.
Trowels
A good trowel is necessary for getting a finish that looks professional.
Magic trowel.
Its wide, flexible blade makes it easier to create a smooth finish.
Flat trowel.
Used to spread out coatings to give them a smooth finish. It’s also useful for patching cracks or other surface imperfections.
Notched trowel.
With a notched trowel, the ridges allow for better air release, reducing the amount of air bubbles that get trapped as you smooth out the coating.
Concrete Float
Use it to make sure your coating is even and smooth.
Protective Gear
Make sure you and your crews are safe by staying equipped with necessary gear.
Gloves to protect your hands from any material that are harmful when they come in contact with skin.
Safety glasses to protect your eyes—not only from any splashing that might occur during the application process, but also from harmful UV rays your eyes are exposed to over time.
Respirator to protect your lungs from dust and fumes that are often distributed during product application, and hard to avoid when in spaces that aren’t well-ventilated.
Measuring Tools
Keep measuring implements on hand to get accurate amounts of materials such as coloring product, additives, and more.
Tools Needed for Concrete Prep
Before applying a coating, you’ll need to adequately prepare your concrete. Here are some tools you will need:
- Pressure washer to thoroughly clean the surface before applying a new coating.
- Concrete grinder to remove old coatings and/or sealers and even out the surface.
- Vacuum to use after grinding and cleaning to ensure that you’ve removed all dust and debris from the surface.
- Crack repair kit to resolve any cracks, holes, or other surface imperfections before you apply the new coating.
